Admissions Success Pathway - Holistic Review Process

Breadcrumbs

The Admission Success Pathways are designed to optimize your academic preparation, selected major and career goals; we also know that some students may take longer to achieve those goals and some students have more than one goal. The Admission Success Pathways offer access to a selective, internationally recognized research university meeting you where you are academically right now. Demonstrating the belief that with the right support, combination of academic courses, number of hours spent in the classroom and student success initiatives we can help you achieve your goals.

If you would like to request entry into an Admission Success Pathway that you were not originally admitted into, please click the link below to complete the request form. Retesting does not guarantee a spot in a specific pathway. Any new scores submitted will be part of the holistic review along with strength of schedule, academic rigor, grades and educational goals. A complete file with updated transcripts, test scores, PERT scores (if applicable), and personal statement are required prior to receiving a holistic evaluation.

Holistic Review Evaluation Criteria

FIU is considered a selective university where objective measures such as GPA, test scores and academic course rigor have been proven to play a role in student success.

However, we know that other, more subjective measures such as motivation, drive, courage, perseverance, resolve and strength of character play an important role in students' ability to succeed at FIU and in life. Students will be required to upload a 500 word (one-page, single spaced) personal statement explaining which of these measures makes you a good candidate for admission to FIU and what strategies you will use to ensure your success in and out of the classroom.

In addition to evaluating the students' response to the essay prompt, we will also evaluate applications on the following characteristics:

  1. Strength of schedule; did you challenge yourself in high school by taking more academics than electives?
  2. Academic rigor; did you take advanced, honors, AP, IB, AICE or Dual Enrollment classes to challenge yourself?
  3. Critical thinking; did you honestly and openly explain not only why are you a good candidate for admission to FIU, but also the strategies you will use to ensure your success both inside and outside of the classroom.
  4. College-level writing; was your personal statement well written which includes proper grammar, punctuation and spelling?
  5. Special talents, achievements and accomplishments; this may include work, honors, awards, the arts, sports, leadership and/or service to community.
  6. Competitiveness of major and academic strength; some majors may require that an applicant meet certain pre-requisites or be academically ready for advanced levels of math, science or writing. Lack of readiness may affect the decision to offer a student admission until such academic achievements are met.
