We are pleased that you would like to attend Florida International University (FIU), one of the United States’ largest, most global, and most highly recognized public research universities.


Ideally located on the Atlantic coast in the global city of Miami, Florida, you will be living and learning with people from all 50 states and 142 countries, most notably Colombia, Venezuela, Jamaica, China, Peru, The Bahamas, and Trinidad & Tobago. Our student population includes about 2,500 international students.

International Student Freshman Requirements

You are encouraged to follow the Steps to Apply as soon as possible as international student applications do require extra processing time. Please adhere to these important Dates & Deadlines below.

Steps to Apply

To apply, please submit the following:

  • Online Application
  • $30 application fee or SAT/ACT waiver
  • Official high school and/or college transcripts—sent directly from your high school and/or college in a sealed envelope to:

  • Translation of all documents not presented in English
  • NACES course-by-course evaluation of all international transcripts
  • SAT or ACT scores
  • TOEFL or IELTS proficiency scores

NOTE: Transcripts received by FIU become the property of FIU and will not be returned to the applicant or forwarded to any other institution. Please do not send us your original transcript/diploma if you have no other copies.

Dates & Deadlines

Admissions decisions are made on a space-available basis as applications are completed and all supporting documents are recieved. In order to be invited to apply for merit scholarships you must be admitted prior to November 1 and meet minimum scholarship criteria.

Global First Year Program

Designed specifically for adventurous and ambitious international students, the Global First Year prepares students for academic, social and professional success at Florida International University and beyond. This program is meant for students that have good high school grades but need additional English language assistance or are unable to take the SAT or ACT test. The program lasts either 9 months or 12 months depending on the student’s current academic English abilities. After the program, students in good academic standing, will then transition into the second year of a full-term degree seeking program, here at FIU. English Language Proficiency

The TOEFL or IELTS is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. These tests are given worldwide. There is a fee for the examination. A minimum score is required for all undergraduate programs and are as follows:

IELTS: 6.5

TOEFL (Institution code: 5206):
Paper-based: 550
Internet-based(iBT): 80

The following exceptions apply:

1. Applicants who completed 4 years of high school in the United States or other English-speaking countries or an international high school that is accredited by a U.S. regional accrediting body.
2. Applicants who hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution within the United States or other English-speaking countries.
3. Applicants who meet a minimum SAT verbal section score of 500 or ACT English score of 20.
